WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine praised Commonwealth Transportation Board approval of a $50 million loan for the City of Alexandria to construct a Potomac Yard Metrorail station, a project Warner and Kaine have supported.

“I applaud the Commonwealth Transportation Board for working together with the City of Alexandria to approve initial funding for a new Metro station at Potomac Yard," said Sen. Warner. "Alexandria has been my home for over 20 years and I know full well the opportunities for more jobs and private sector investment that this presents. This station represents a great opportunity to further the transit-friendly economic growth that this area has seen in recent years.”

“I’m pleased to see this project moving forward because I believe Metro at Potomac Yard will bolster economic development and quality of life on the Route 1 corridor and reduce congestion on the GW Parkway,” said Sen. Kaine.  “While the emergency at L’Enfant Plaza on Monday weighs heavily on all our minds – and we will continue to demand answers from WMATA about what went wrong and how to improve safety protocols – I believe Metro plays a positive role in building vibrant Northern Virginia communities with strong local economies and less traffic.”

As Governors, Warner and Kaine were instrumental in making the Silver Line project a reality, and they have continued to support funding for Metro in the Senate.
