Senator Warner had the immense honor today of presenting 95-year-old World War II veteran Ralph Kuethe with a Silver Star, the third highest military decoration awarded for gallantry in action. Colonel Kuethe earned the distinction during his heroic service almost 70 years ago. He took charge of a disorganized platoon under heavy pressure from artillery, mortars and tank fire in France, and led his men to repel the enemy attack and hold their position.

“That action, like many in the World War II battles, took tremendous courage and valor, and when combined with the efforts of his fellow soldiers, they were able to turn the tide and decisively send the enemy back with heavy casualties,” Senator Warner said today.

Originally, the Silver Star had been mistakenly awarded to a different soldier for Colonel Kuethe’s actions. However, Colonel Kuethe, who lives in Northern Virginia, eventually learned that he was eligible to apply for the award, and contacted Senator Warner’s office for help.

Senator Warner wrote the Secretary of the Army, urging him to award the Silver Star to Colonel Kuethe. In June, Senator Warner received notification that Colonel Kuethe would receive the commendation.

“While it may be 70 years overdue Colonel Kuethe, I could not be prouder as a Virginian to present you with this commendation today,” Senator Warner said.
