Washington Post: 'Gang of 6' senators launch public campaign to support deficit reduction

While Washington bickers noisily over cutting a small slice of the federal budget, Sens. Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, and Saxby Chambliss, a Georgia Republican, launched a campaign Monday to convince the public that merely cutting spending will do little to tame the $14 trillion national debt.
While the Obama administration and Congressional Republicans fight in Washington over cutting a small slice of the federal budget, deficit hawks from both parties have taken to the road to persuade the public that the only way to really fix the nation’s finances is to shrink the growth of popular entitlement programs and to raise revenues.
Most lawmakers in Washington are preoccupied these days with paying the government's bills for the next couple of weeks or the next six months. But the real problem is the much larger debt looming in the distance. That's why a small, bipartisan group of senators, dubbed the "Gang of Six," has been meeting to focus on the longer term and how to deal with the government's mounting debt.

Today the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report outlining more than 80 ways we can reduce waste, modernize operations and eliminate duplication across the entire federal government. “This report confirms what we all know – that there is room to trim back our government spending, but we’ve got to do it carefully,” Senator Warner said in response to the report.

WHEN WE FIRST wrote in December to applaud the stop-the-dawdling debt reduction effort launched by Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) and Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), the bipartisan group seemed like a potentially useful adjunct to the momentum generated by President Obama's fiscal responsibility commission in the fall.
Sen. Mark Warner is trying. The Virginia Democrat, the prototypical political moderate, is part of a small group of senators seeking to do what nobody else in Washington seems capable of doing. They are trying to devise the Big Deal that will provide a fix to the country's frightening budget deficits, not just now but for years to come.

Senators Warner and Webb today worked to promote airline safety by modernizing the Federal Aviation Administration’s outdated, radar-based air traffic control system. The Senators also blocked efforts to make large-scale changes that could have significantly overburdened flight operations at Reagan National Airport in Northern Virginia.
