Warner, Kaine Announce More Than $2.6 Million in Federal Funds to Help Protect and Restore Coastal Communities

U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) announced today that Virginia is receiving $2,670,000 in federal funds from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to help the Commonwealth administer its coastal management program. The funding comes as part of the National Coastal Zone Management Program, which serves as an important voluntary federal-state partnership that protects, restores, and responsibly develops our nation's coastal communities and resources by balancing economic development, coastal uses, and natural resource protection.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Jim Webb and Mark R. Warner today urged federal authorities to coordinate with emergency preparedness officials in Virginia and other coastal states in the event that the BP oil spill reaches Atlantic coastal areas. Several experts have indicated it is possible that oil from the Gulf of Mexico spill could reach the Gulf Stream and be carried up the Atlantic coast to Virginia.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway, U.S. Senators Kay R. Hagan (D-NC), Richard Burr (R-NC), Jim Webb (D-VA), and Mark Warner (D-VA) are today introducing legislation authorizing the National Park Service (NPS) to acquire up to 50,000 acres of land surrounding the historic roadway. Congressmen Heath Shuler (D-NC), David Price (D-NC), Rick Boucher (D-VA), and Tom Perriello (D-VA) will introduce companion legislation in the House of Representatives. The Blue Ridge Parkway’s anniversary is being celebrated throughout 2010, and will culminate in September.
