Warner, Webb Announce $5M for Valley Green Jobs Program

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Jim Webb today announced that the Shenandoah Valley Workforce Investment Board (SVWIB) has received a $5 million investment from the economic stimulus package to fund a new program to train workers for jobs in the region’s emerging “green” technology manufacturing and renewable energy industries. The funding, awarded through the U.S. Department of Labor, will provide workforce training opportunities for an estimated 1,000 Virginians across 10 counties and six cities in the Shenandoah Valley.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Jim Webb today announced $24 million in federal stimulus funding for two projects that will “jump-start” Virginia’s transition to expanded use of healthcare information technology (HIT) and electronic health records (EHR). These grants will help Virginia medical professionals as they work to implement and use HIT to lower consumer health care costs, minimize redundant paperwork and reduce medical errors.

U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner (D-VA) today introduced legislation that provides an additional incentive to encourage overseas employers to create and locate jobs here in the United States. The America Recruits Act of 2010 allows the U.S. Department of Commerce to provide federal loan incentives of up to $10,000 for each new job created in the advanced manufacturing and information technology industries. It would be added to existing state, regional and local economic development incentives, and it would target those projects that would locate new jobs in the nation’s economically distressed regions where unemployment is the highest.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Jim Webb announced today that the U.S. Department of Labor has approved Transition Adjustment Assistance (TAA) for employees of International Paper (IP) Co.’s paper mill in Franklin, Va. The mill, which employs about 1,100 people, began shutting-down operations in Franklin last month. The company has said it plans to complete its shut-down next spring.

Glenn Nye have joined members of Congress from two other states in urging the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to approve a tax deduction known as a "casualty loss" for homeowners in Virginia, Florida and Virginia who are dealing with the structural defects and health problems associated with contaminated drywall. Casualty loss deductions allow property owners to deduct from their taxes a portion of the decrease in value of the property following sudden or unexpected damage. WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Jim Webb announced today that the U.S. Department of Labor has approved Transition Adjustment Assistance (TAA) for former employees of International Paper's (IP) lumber mill in Franklin. The mill, which employed about 120 people, closed early this summer because of a decline in product demand due to increased foreign imports. According to company officials, the mill produced pine lumber board and was not directly involved in the operations of IP's Franklin paper mill.

In a letter to the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, the Virginia lawmakers emphasized that Langley Air Force Base (LAFB) in Hampton is a “world-class installation” with the excess operational capacity to support increased numbers of the F-22.
