WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) will host the second annual Virginia Leadership Summit on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the University of Richmond. The nonpartisan Summit brings together graduates of Virginia’s leadership development programs for high-level conversations about challenges and opportunities for Virginia in education, workforce development, and job creation.

Senator Warner today urged Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel to reconsider his decision to furlough almost 11,000 teachers at Defense Department-operated schools for up to five days as part of the Pentagon’s plan to comply with budget cuts required due to the sequester.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-VA), Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) today introduced The Student Right to Know Before You Go Act to ensure that a wide range of comparative data about higher education programs is more readily available for prospective students and their families. They discussed their bipartisan legislation during a roundtable on Capitol Hill this morning with students, parents and school counselors.

Senators Webb and Warner today announced $3,247,990 in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds will go to the Louisa County School Board (LCSB) to pay for new school construction following damage caused by the August 2011 earthquake. After FEMA initially refused to provide disaster aid in October 2011, both Senators objected and intervened.

Senator Warner today announced a consulting agreement between the Virginia Foundation for Community Colleges Education and the India-based Wadhwani Foundation to promote skills-based education in India. The memorandum was signed by Dr. Ajay Kela, President and CEO of Wadhwani Foundation, and Dr. Glenn DuBois, Chancellor of Virginia’s Community College System.

Senators Jim Webb (D-VA) and Mark Warner (D-VA) today introduced “The Rehabilitation of Historic Schools Act of 2011,” which provides a tax credit for communities to partner with private sector developers to rehabilitate the nation’s older school buildings. The legislation amends existing law to allow local governments to use the Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credit to rebuild decaying schools.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senators Jim Webb and Mark Warner today announced that a network of three community colleges will share a $1.2 million federal grant to provide nursing education in new technologies to nursing students in Southwest Virginia. Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) in Abingdon is leading the consortium, called the Virginia Appalachian Tricollege Nursing Program (VATNP), which also includes Southwest Virginia Community College (SVCC) and Mountain Empire Community College (MECC). The grant money will be used to strengthen the education and preparation of the nursing workforce in Southwest Virginia leading to higher quality care for the medically underserved population of the rural Appalachia.

Senators Jim Webb and Mark Warner announced today that Virginia has been awarded an additional $324.6 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 to support public education. To date, Virginia has received more than $2 billion in stimulus funds, and state officials report these funds have supported nearly 8,000 education jobs so far this year.
