Richmond Times-Dispatch: Kaine, Warner call for federal action after Lynchburg train derailment

Sens. Mark R. Warner and Timothy M. Kaine released a letter they sent today to Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx in response to the derailment of a CSX train on April 30 in downtown Lynchburg, sending 17 oil-filled tanker cars off the tracks and three into the James River.

"In late 2012, the White House identified 269 reports it would like to eliminate. The Dog and Cat Fur Protection report was on that list, along with a few other doozies...After the White House put out its list, the Senate’s Warner and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) wrote bills to eliminate some of the least useful reports."
Sen. Mark R. Warner has again joined with an Illinois lawmaker on behalf of two whistle-blowing pilots at Langley Air Force Base, this time in hopes of saving one's career. Warner, a Democrat, and Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger have written to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel about Maj. Jeremy Gordon and Capt. Joshua Wilson.

The estimated student loan debt in America is $1.2 trillion, said Sen. Mark Warner (D-Virginia) in an interview with the Spartan Echo on May 1; this is greater than the estimated credit card debt in America.
Warner says knowing so many jobs will be maintained could spur other economic growth. "This shows some of the uncertainty we saw with sequestration hopefully will be in the rear-view mirror," Warner said.
Both chambers of Congress passed the DATA Act unanimously this month, representing a rare showing of widespread agreement between Democrats and Republicans. Sens. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) sponsored the legislation.
