The Memorial Bridge, linking Virginia to D.C., could shut down by 2021 if it doesn’t get a major safety overhaul, according to Virginia’s senators and the mayor of D.C.
Sen. Warner has spent a lot of time thinking about work. He believes the way workers are classified and the nature of the relationships between employers and employees needs to change. He spoke with Marketplace host Kai Ryssdal.

Warner, who is serving his second term as a senator, says statistics show as many as 60 percent of Americans couldn’t afford an unexpected $400 expense. “[We’re] at a real uncertain time,” Warner says, “and the best evidence of that is the political campaign that is playing out right now where people go to the extremes.”
Sen. Mark Warner (D., Va.) introduced a bill in Congress in January that would allow employers to put as much as $5,500 a year pretax toward their workers’ student loans.
