Senator Warner serves Virginia in a variety of ways, including by developing public policy, providing direct assistance to individuals and local communities, and listening to the different needs of the diverse communities across the Commonwealth.  He is proud to be able to offer students an opportunity to learn more about these responsibilities through an internship.

In-person internships are available in Senator Warner’s Washington, D.C. and Virginia offices year round.  Preference will be given to candidates who have completed their first year of college and who reside in Virginia or attend college in state. To be eligible for an internship, an individual must have graduated from high school.  In order to be considered, all applicants must meet the requirements below, and submit an application by the listed deadline.  

If applying for an internship in the Senator’s Washington, D.C. office:

• You will need to meet a minimum time commitment to be considered.  In the fall and spring, you must be able to commit to interning for a minimum of 24 hours per week for the duration of the session.  (During the 6-week summer session, internships are generally full time, from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday, unless you have been approved for an accommodation.)
• Duties might include: answering constituent phone calls and providing callers with assistance; processing constituent correspondence; attending hearings/briefings and drafting summaries; conducting research and producing written materials for legislative aides; assisting the Senator’s communications team in drafting press materials; leading tours of the historic U.S. Capitol Building; and performing a host of other tasks, large and small, that help the Senator achieve his Constitutional obligations.

If applying for an internship in one of the Senator’s Virginia offices:

• You will need to meet a minimum time commitment to be considered.  In the fall and spring, you must be able to commit to interning for a minimum of 12 hours per week for the duration of the session.  (During the 10-week summer session, you must be able to commit to interning for a minimum of 24 hours per week.)
• Duties might include: answering constituent phone calls and providing callers with assistance; processing constituent requests for assistance; helping staff develop regional outreach calendars; attending community outreach events; preparing congressional inquiries; supporting the congratulatory letter operation; front office duties; basic office administration; and performing a host of other tasks, large and small, that help the Senator achieve his Constitutional obligations.

Fall interns that meet the minimum time commitment for an internship in either the D.C. or a state office will receive pre-tax stipend as detailed below.

• for a $1000 pre-tax stipend, you must be able to commit to working between 12 – 23 hours per week for the entire session (applicable for state office interns only)
• for a $2000 pre-tax stipend, you must be able to commit to working at least 24 hours a week for the entire session
