ARRASenator Warner announced today that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has released nearly $51 million from the economic recovery package for improvements to public housing units that will directly benefit Virginia.

Twenty-nine local Redevelopment and Housing Authorities in Virginia will receive economic recovery funds through the HUD’s Public Housing Capital Fund Program.  The money will be used to address much-needed improvements to public housing units, create jobs and reduce energy costs.

Senator Warner said of the release:

“These investments will quickly put people to work modernizing public housing units, making improvements to increase energy efficiency and lowering our long-term operating costs."

HUD’s Capital Fund Program provides annual funding to public housing authorities to develop, finance, and/or modernize the public housing in their communities. This funding can also be used to make large-scale improvements such as new roofs and for the replacement of plumbing and electrical systems to more energy efficient standards.
