Senator Warner has launched a contest to pick a cover photo of Virginia for his Facebook page by asking for submissions from his more than 16,500 followers. Facebook, the popular social media tool, will be transitioning all pages to their new Timeline format on Friday, March 30. As part of the new format, all pages must include a large “cover photo.”

In his State of the Union Address, President Obama called on Congress to pass an agenda that helps start-ups and small businesses succeed. We have already introduced a plan that shares his goals. It's called the Startup Act. Research conducted by the Kauffman Foundation and others has consistently shown that companies less than five years old accounted for nearly all net job creation in our economy over the past three decades.

As the co-founder of Nextel and a former venture capitalist, the Senator appreciates the role of new technology and he’s a big fan of social media.
Backlog plagues fed government's pension system

Backlogs and delays continue to plague the federal government's pension system. Retirees wait an average of five months to receive their first full pension check -- but delays of a year or more are common. The Office of Personnel Management says it has plan to hire more people to process a backlog of 64,000 paper records, but it could take 18 months or more to solve the problem.
SBA approves loans for storm damage

The Small Business Association today approved emergency low-interest loans for homeowners, renters and businesses who suffered major damage from the April tornadoes in Southwest Virginia. The SBA can now authorize loans of up to $200,000 to homeowners to repair or restore their homes or property and up to $40,000 to help repair or replace personal items damaged during the tornadoes.

Tornados ripped through the South yesterday, causing hundreds of deaths and massive destruction in several different states, including Virginia. Areas hardest-hit by the storms include Goochland, Halifax, Shenandoah, Washington and other southwest Virginia counties.
A Great Day in Roanoke and Southwest

This past Saturday, the Senator was able to get down to Roanoke and Southwest Virginia for a full-day of events. The day began in Roanoke, where the Senator walked (ok, actually ran) in the Saint Patrick’s Parade. The jog through downtown allowed the Senator to meet and shake hands with the thousands in attendance that were decked out in green, and maroon and orange -- surely a hold-over from a night of celebrating a Virginia Tech win in the ACC tournament.

Our second day in southwest Virginia started with a hearty “thank you” for the hundreds of volunteers, dentists, doctors and nurses who run the Remote Area Medical “Mission of Mercy” in Wise County each year.
Senator Warner visited a dozen communities across Southwest Virginia this weekend.
The Bristol Herald-Courier reports: as part of a trip through Southwest Virginia on July 23-24, 2010, Senator Warner held a roundtable discussion with energy officials to discuss alternatives that might be implemented in the region.
