18 Senators, 53 Minutes, One Topic: The Deficit

Sen. Warner and Georgia GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss led an organized series of back-to-back floor speeches today from a bipartisan group of 18 Senators calling for comprehensive tax reform and deficit/debt reduction by the end of next year. That’s a more aggressive timeline than anyone else in Washington, including the White House, has talked about to date.

This bipartisan group started forming back in mid-July when Sens. Warner and Chambliss quietly began co-hosting “seminars” for their colleagues to educate themselves on the scope of the nation’s long-term fiscal challenges.

You could call this tangible evidence of something Sen. Warner has often talked about – the formation of a “bipartisan radical centrist” coalition in the U.S. Senate.

“This is the way the Senate is supposed to work,” Tennessee Republican Lamar Alexander said.

You can view Senator Warner’s comments below.
