WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner (D-VA) issued the following statement today on the upcoming Senate confirmation vote on Elena Kagan’s nomination to serve as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. A vote on her nomination is expected next week.

"I commend Chairman Leahy and Ranking Member Sessions for conducting an open and fair hearing on Elena Kagan's nomination to serve as an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. Elena's testimony showed that she will be an impartial justice and, in her own words, ‘enable all Americans, regardless of their background or their beliefs, to get a fair hearing and an equal chance at justice.’

“Elena Kagan has been a trailblazer. I believe her life story and academic and legal experience will provide an important perspective to the deliberations and decisions of the Court.

“I have known Elena Kagan for several years and had an opportunity to meet with her to discuss this nomination. I remain impressed by her commitment to public service, her sharp intellect and her outstanding credentials.

“I believe Elena Kagan embodies the excellence that we look for in a Supreme Court justice, and I look forward to casting my vote in support of her nomination."
