WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement on today’s resignation of David Petraeus as Director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency:

“This afternoon, I learned with regret about the resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus.  Director Petraeus served with distinction during a long career in the U.S. Army and at the Agency.

As a member of the Senate’s Select Committee on Intelligence, I met with Director Petraeus regularly, and I was continually impressed with his professionalism, directness, and dedication to the men and women of the CIA.

I am fortunate to represent many intelligence professionals who live and work in Virginia. I know how hard they work every day at CIA Headquarters in Langley,  and many of them take enormous risks around the world to keep the nation safe in perilous times.

At this difficult time, my thoughts are with Director Petraeus and his family and with the brave professionals who serve at the CIA."
